G.P. Gooch’s study of Louis is a very early biography and although a little dated from the point of view of current research is still an informative read and is a superior popular history title with academic pretensions.

Oliver Bernier‘s Louis the Beloved  is something of a popular history but has been seen as a good explanation of a complex time, especially for beginners in this period of French history.
